Twenty-plus years of hanging holiday lighting on Gulf Coast homes, distilled into the way we actually do it
I've been hanging Christmas lights on Northwest Florida homes for more than twenty years, from single-story ranches in Pace to two-story waterfront places on Pensacola Beach where the salt spray never lets up. In that time I've learned that a beautiful, trouble-free display comes down to a handful of things done right: measuring before you buy, picking lights that survive our climate, using the correct clip for your roof, and respecting the electrical load. Get those right and your display looks sharp all season and comes down clean in January. Get them wrong and you're up a ladder in December chasing a dead run, or worse, patching a leak in your roof come spring. Here's how we do it.
Step 1: Plan and Measure Before You Buy Anything
Every good christmas light installation starts on the ground with a tape measure, not at the checkout counter. Walk the whole roofline and decide what you actually want to light. The usual candidates are the front eaves and gutters, the peaks and gables, porch columns, a few wrapped trees or palm trunks, and the walkway. You don't have to light everything, a clean roofline plus one or two wrapped trunks reads better from the street than a scattered mess of everything at once.
Now measure. Run your tape along every section of eave and gutter you plan to light and add it up in linear feet. Count your peaks, each gable adds a run up one side and down the other, so a home that looks small can have a surprising amount of linework. For columns and trunks, measure the height and the circumference; a trunk wrapped on a 3-inch spiral eats far more light string than people expect.
To estimate what to buy, use the bulb spacing. C9 bulbs on a stringer are usually spaced 12 inches on center, so 100 feet of roofline needs roughly 100 bulbs. Wrapping a tree, figure the spiral spacing you want (tighter is brighter and hungrier) and measure a test wrap on one branch to get your feet-per-branch. Always buy a little extra, an extra stringer of bulbs and a spare box of clips beats a second trip in the middle of the job.
Step 2: Choose the Right Lights
Bulb style sets the whole character of the display, so choose deliberately:
- C9 bulbs, the big, bold roofline classic. Highly visible from the street, and the size most people picture when they think "Christmas lights." Our first choice for eaves and peaks.
- C7 bulbs, the smaller cousin of the C9. A slightly more restrained look, good for smaller homes, railings, and windows.
- Mini and fairy lights, the workhorses for wrapping trunks, branches, columns, and shrubs. Dense and sparkly up close.
For color, warm white is the safe, elegant default, it flatters brick, stucco, and the palms we have down here, and it looks like the vintage bulbs people remember. Multicolor is bolder and more nostalgic; it photographs great and kids love it. There's no wrong answer, but pick one direction and commit rather than mixing warm white and multicolor on the same roofline.
Two decisions matter more than color, though. First, go LED, not incandescent . LEDs draw a fraction of the power, run cool to the touch, don't cook themselves in our heat, and last for years instead of a season. Second, buy commercial-grade over big-box . The cheap sets from the seasonal aisle use thin wire, weak connectors, and unsealed bulbs that corrode fast in salt air. Commercial stringers use heavier gauge wire, gasketed bulbs, and coaxial connectors that hold up. You pay more once instead of a little every year.
Step 3: Use the Right Fasteners, Never Staples or Nails
This is the single most important thing in this whole guide, so I'll say it plainly: never staple or nail lights to your roof. I've seen more roof damage from a staple gun in December than from any storm. A staple or nail punches through the shingle or the flashing, and every one of those holes is a path for water. You won't see the leak in December. You'll see the stain on your ceiling in the spring rains, long after the lights are down and forgotten.
The right way costs nothing extra in effort, you just use a clip made for the surface. There's a clip for every situation:
- All-in-one / gutter clips, grip the lip of the gutter and hold the stringer. The most common clip for a standard roofline.
- Shingle tabs, slide up under the edge of a shingle and hold the wire with no penetration at all.
- Ridge clips, made to sit over the ridge and peak lines where a gutter clip has nothing to grab.
Match the clip to what you're clipping to, space them about every 12 inches so the line stays taut and straight, and your roof stays exactly as watertight as the day you started. That's the whole principle: a great display leaves no holes in your roof.
Step 4: Do the Electrical Math
More displays fail from a tripped breaker than from bad bulbs, and it's always the same cause: too much load on one circuit. Here's the math worth knowing. A standard household circuit is 15 or 20 amps, and you never want to load a circuit past about 80 percent of its rating for a continuous load, so figure roughly 12 amps on a 15-amp circuit and 16 amps on a 20-amp circuit as your working ceiling.
This is where LED earns its keep again. Incandescent C9s pull real current, so you can only run a few stringers end-to-end before you hit the limit, often just two or three sets before the wire itself is maxed out. LED C9s draw so little that you can safely daisy-chain many more stringers in a single run, which means fewer cords, fewer outlets, and a cleaner install. Always check the box for the maximum number of sets the manufacturer says you can connect end-to-end, and don't exceed it, that limit protects the wire, not just the breaker.
A few non-negotiables: use only outdoor-rated extension cords , plug into a GFCI outlet (code requires it outdoors, and it's what saves you if a connection gets wet), and put the whole display on a timer so it isn't your job to remember it every night. Spread big displays across two or three separate circuits rather than cramming everything into one outlet.
Step 5: The Install, Step by Step
With the plan set and the lights bought, here's the actual order we work in:
- Lay out and test on the ground first. Roll out every stringer in the driveway, connect the runs the way they'll go up, and plug them in. Find the dead bulb or bad connector now, at eye level, not when it's 20 feet up.
- Start at the power source. Begin each run near the outlet you'll plug into so the male end lands where the power is, and work outward from there.
- Clip the eaves and gutters. Move steadily across the roofline, seating one clip about every foot and keeping the line pulled snug so it reads as a crisp straight edge from the street.
- Do the peaks and gables. Switch to ridge clips where the gutter ends, and follow the peak up one side and down the other so the roofline outline stays continuous.
- Wrap trunks and columns. Start at the base, wrap in an even spiral, and keep the spacing consistent, tight for a dense sparkle, wider for a lighter touch. Consistency is what makes a wrap look professional.
- Stake the walkway. Set pathway lights an even distance apart and at a uniform height so the path reads as a clean line, not a random scatter.
- Hide and secure the cords. Route extension cords along edges, down downspouts, and through the beds where they disappear. Loose cords looping across the front of the house are the fastest way to make a good display look sloppy, and a trip hazard.
- Test everything before you pack up. Power the whole display on, walk to the street, and look. Fix the dark spot or the crooked run before the ladder goes away.
Step 6: Ladder and Weather Safety
Nothing about a holiday display is worth a fall. Set your extension ladder at the right angle, roughly one foot out from the wall for every four feet up, and make sure both feet are planted on firm, level ground, not soft grass or a slick driveway. Keep your hips between the rails and never overreach; it's always faster to climb down and move the ladder than to stretch that last two feet. Work with a second person: one up top, one footing the ladder and passing materials.
Never install on a wet or icy surface, and down here that means picking your days around the rain rather than fighting through it. Keep your hands dry when you're handling connections, stay well clear of the service line and any overhead power lines, and if a run needs to go anywhere near the electrical drop, that's the moment to stop and call a pro.
Step 7: What's Different About Northwest Florida
Hanging holiday lighting on the Gulf Coast is its own animal. The salt air off the Gulf and Santa Rosa Sound is brutal on metal, and our humidity finds every unsealed gap. That's why cheap lights die so fast here, the connectors corrode, the bulbs fog and short, and by year two half the run is dark. Use corrosion-resistant clips, choose gasketed commercial-grade bulbs, and give every outdoor connection a shot of dielectric grease or a proper weatherproof cover so moisture can't creep in.
Our roofs are their own challenge too. Tile and metal roofs common around Pensacola Beach, Perdido Key, and Navarre don't take a standard shingle tab, so you match the clip to the surface, there are clips made for tile courses and for standing-seam metal. And palm trunks aren't oak: a spiral wrap on a palm needs enough slack to move with the tree in the wind without pulling the string tight. Plan the install around the materials you actually have and it'll hold all season.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Almost every problem we get called out to fix traces back to the same short list:
- Staples and nails in the roof. Already covered, but it's the biggest one. Clips only.
- Overloading a circuit. Too many stringers on one outlet trips the breaker or, worse, cooks the wire. Do the amp math and split the load.
- Using indoor lights outside. Indoor sets aren't sealed or rated for weather and fail fast in our humidity. Outdoor-rated only.
- Mismatched bulbs. Mixing bulb sizes, colors, or brightness on one run looks accidental. Keep a run uniform.
- Cords left exposed. Loose extension cords across the house ruin the look and create trip hazards. Tuck and secure them.
- Skipping the measuring step. Buying by guesswork means either coming up short mid-install or draping leftover string somewhere it doesn't belong.
Takedown and Storage
The display isn't finished until it's put away right. Take everything down in January, the longer stringers sit through Gulf Coast weather, the more the connectors corrode and the UV degrades the wire. As you pull each run, coil it onto a reel or wrap it around a piece of cardboard rather than balling it up; tangled knots are how good lights get damaged in the off-season. Label each reel by where it goes on the house, "front eave," "left peak," "big palm", and next December's install takes a fraction of the time. Store everything clean and bone dry in a bin, out of the heat if you can, and it'll be ready to hang again for years.
When to Hire a Pro
I'll be honest with you: plenty of homeowners can do a tidy single-story display over a weekend, and if that's you, everything above is what you need. But there are real reasons people hand it off. The ladder work on a two-story home or a steep roof is genuinely dangerous, and no one should be up there alone. The electrical load on a big display takes some planning to get right. And even a modest home can eat a full day of your time once you factor in the layout, the testing, and the takedown come January.
